There are wonderful traditions in Hungary that
celebrate Christmas. For one, we don't have a "Santa Claus"-type
character, instead, the Baby Jesus brings the presents on
Christmas eve to the children. At an appointed time, a bell
sounds announcing that the Angels have come and brought the tree
and gifts.
Our versions of Santa, is in Mikulas (St. Nick)(pronounced
mee-koo-lash) and he comes on his birthday, Dec. 6th. The
children leave out their shoes on Dec. 5th,and during the night
Mikkulas and Black Peter come to fill the shoes. Good children
receive goodies, while naughty children only get a switch!
