Our children are showing Flat Andrew around Brisbane on the weekends. Click the photo for some pictures. As part of our Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE), in third term, all Year 5 classes once again in 2005 visited a gold mining town just outside of Beenleigh, run by Berrinbah East State School.   Click here for our photos.
As part of our Spider Theme in 2004, the children, for technology, had to design some spider homes, taking into consideration the type of spider that would live in it and its needs. Here's some photos of our spider homes. As part of our Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE), in third term, 2004, all Year 5 classes once again visited a gold mining town just outside of Beenleigh, run by Berrinbah East State School.   Click here for our photos.

As part of our cartoon theme, in first term, and as a follow up to Joffa's Toonschool, the children were required to create a cartoon using "Paint" on the computers. They used cartooning concepts such as line, shape, numbers and letters. To view our cartoons, click here. Every Wednesday, Year 5 has a Morning Session where the children take turns in presenting an item. Our topics are - News, Book Review, Demonstration, Song, Science Experiment and General Knowledge.  Click here for some photos of our Morning Session on Wednesday, 5 March, 2003, which had some interesting Science Experiments and a yummy Demonstration
Two girls, Emma and Rachel, have written some great poems. They are entered in the Write 4 Fun Poetry Competition and we wish them all the best of luck. Click here for their poems. Once again in 2002, we started off with some Australian Acrostics. This year's poems are dedicated to the brave firemen who battled the terrible bushfires around Canberra in January this year, often at the expense of their own homes.   Click here for our poems.
Year 5 in 2002, were delighted to receive a huge parcel all the way from  Macpherson Elementary school in St John's, Newfoundland. The parcel took 2 months to arrive and contained letters, lollies, pins, flags, posters, maps, books and many other interesting items all the way from Newfoundland, which is an island off the east coast of Canada for those who don't know where it is!! Thanks to teacher Daniel Rideout and all the kids in Grade 4 for the wonderful parcel. We will send back our own letters and some uniquely Australian gifts!! Third term Science on Space will be in the form of a Space Quest that we will be doing in teams of three students. Hopefully we will have fun and learn a lot while we are doing it.  Click on the alien to go to the Space Quest pages. Our first  excursion for 2000 was rather late this year with both Redlands Shire Council and Ormiston House to coordinate for bookings. However, we finally got there on 18 May, 2000 and once again had a very informative talk from Francis, the Education Officer for Redlands Shire and a very interesting tour through Ormiston House , one of the oldest historical houses in the area. Volunteers only, the ladies who show the children around are great sources of knowledge about Ormiston House and its history and the House is open to the public on the weekends as well. Well worth a visit for a tour and tea and scones!! Click on the flower for our pictures.
Our first theme for the year was on Australia. We wrote some great Acrostic Poems about Australia this year. Acrostic poetry is where you take each letter of a word and use that letter to begin each line of a poem. The poem doesn't have to rhyme but it must convey the meaning of the word in the poem. Click on the picture of the galahs to read these and our previous years Acrostic poems. On Wednesday, 7 June, 2000, Years 5 classes went on their annual excursion to Mt Cootha's Botanical Gardens and the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium. Throughout the year, we do several themes for our Language, Science and Social Studies units. Below is the work we produced during those themes on Australian Animals, Spiders, Banjo Paterson, Pirates, Solar System and a Class Newspaper as well as some of our excursions.

THEMES

Our first theme for 1998 is on Australia. We celebrate Australia Day on 26 January each year as the day the First Fleet with 11 ships and 1030 convicts, marines and soldiers landed at Sydney Cove to establish a new settlement in "New South Wales". For this theme, we have written some Acrostic Poems, click on the flag to read our poems. Click here to read some Poems. One of our Projects for 1997, was on Australian Primary Industries which we learnt about in Social Studies. Click on the picture of the lamb to have a look at our great Projects about Beef Cattle, Cotton, Sugar Cane, Dairy Cattle, Sugar Cane and Wheat. We hope to add some more topics to these pages in 1998.
One of our themes each year is on Spiders. These pages are so popular, we keep them from year to year and add new information from each new class. Click on the spider to go to our Spider page with lots of information about spiders as well as some interesting spider poems and stories. Another theme each year is on Pirates. As with the Spider Pages, these pages are very popular and will be featured on the Internet Explorer site on 25 February, 1998. Click on the skull to see our new work. You will be able to read all about pirates and our bloodthirsty pirate stories and limericks. When you've finished, there will be some questions to test your knowledge.
For our class newspaper, Year 5 kids have contributed some jokes which they would like to share with you. We also have included some of our favourite animated gifs (all those neat moving pictures). Click on the smiley face to read our jokes. In Science each year, Year 5 also study the Solar System. Each new class adds heaps of great information to these pages too. Click on the Earth to go to our Solar System pages with heaps of pictures and information on the Planets.
In 1998, we researched the life of another of Australia's great writers, Henry Lawson. Click on the picture of Henry Lawson to read his life story and read some of his poetry and stories. For Science, Year 5A watched David Attenborough's excellent video "Secret Lives of Plants" and learnt all about Seed Dispersal. The children then wrote a report from their notes and did an excellent job. Here's a report by Chris.
In 1997, Year 5 studied the work of one of Australia's greatest writers, A.B. Paterson (The Banjo) and learnt much about this famous poet and author. Click on the picture of Banjo to read about his life and works taken from the Projects done by children in Year 5B. Here's another contribution to our page from Year 5. In 1997, they completed some Projects on Australian Animals which were really great.

Click on the koala to have a look at Year 5's Australian Animals pages.

In 1997, our children also corresponded with children at Gander Academy in Canada. They sent us some wonderful pictures of their part of the world which we would like to share with you. Click on the Canadian flag to go to these pictures.
