Australia Day, 26 January

On January 26 each year, Australians have a national holiday to  remember our origins and celebrate our achievements. 

Ian ThorpeOn Australia Day, the  achievements of Australian citizens are recognised. Australia Day Awards are conferred upon civilians for  outstanding work in the community. It is one of the ways the Australian government recognises the dedication and integrity these individuals display by their actions. The Order of Australia was instituted in 1975. In 2000, the "Young Australian of the Year" was swimmer, Ian Thorpe, in 2001 it was James Fitzpatrick, a medical student and Queenslander, Scott Hocknull,  was "Young Australian of the Year" in 2002. In 2003, the winner is Leyton Hewitt, a young tennis star who has won many major tournaments.
